The Science of CBD

Our LovePet line of products are made from high grade, pesticide free, non-GMO, medicinal CBD hemp. The main ingredient, 99% Pure Isolate PCR (Phyto-Cannabinoid Rich) Hemp Oil, is made from the hemp plant and contains over 200+ naturally occurring, therapeutic plant compounds. One of these compounds is called Cannabidiol (or CBD), part of a larger spectrum of plant substances known as phytocannabinoids. CBD comprises approximately 40% of the plant’s total cannabinoid makeup.

Scientific and clinical research shows that CBD has potential therapeutic benefits in the treatment of various conditions in animals, including: pain, inflammation, anxiety, nausea, arthritis, skin and coat issues, neurological disorders, digestive health problems, age-related illnesses and conditions, and recovery from surgery.

How it Works

The Endocannabinoid System

Phytocannabinoids, including CBD, work to activate the the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The ECS is a regulatory system made up of Endocannabinoids, and cannabinoid receptors, and is found throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems of mammals. This system runs in pathways from the end of your pet’s nose to the tip of its tail —  in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells — with the ultimate goal of creating and restoring balance and optimum health and wellness.

Cannabinoid Receptors

Cannabinoid receptors live throughout the body within the cell membranes. Researchers believe this receptor system is larger than any other. The physiological processes in the Endocannabinoid system begin when Cannabinoid receptors are stimulated. This can occur when these receptors are activated by Endocannabinoids (substances the body naturally makes) or by a external cannabinoid source (a phytocannabinoid such as CBD). Once this happens, a variety of reactions follow. Many of these reactions can result in healing and medicinal benefits for your pet.

Beyond CBD - Terpenes & Flavonoids

The hemp plant contains substances beyond CBD — including terpenes and flavonoids — that contribute to its therapeutic action.

Terpenes

Terpenes are organic compounds that exist in the resin of the hemp plant. There are over 120 terpenes found in hemp, and they are extracted into the essential oils used to make therapeutics.

Why are terpenes important?

  • They contribute to producing the smell and taste of the plant oil.
  • They bind to CBD receptors to contribute to the healing properties of the phytocannabinoids.
  • They work synergistically with the phytocannabinoids and more than 400 other plant compounds to add to the therapeutic effectiveness of the plant. This is called the “entourage effect”.

Flavonoids

Currently, the hemp plant is known to contain 23 flavonoids. Flavonoids are compounds in all plants believed to have antioxidant and therapeutic properties. Research into flavonoids in hemp is limited, but this research has already shown that these compounds have important therapeutic properties, and work together with the Endocannabinoid system, phytocannabinoids and terpenes to produce positive physiological effects.

Putting it all Together

Research shows that hemp-based compounds comprised of phytocannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids have greater therapeutic benefit than single compound therapies containing CBD only. Our products combined therapeutic action ensures the best potential for positive results when using a hemp-based CBD product for your pet.
